THE WAY IT ALL BEGAN...

The idea for Distinctive Desserts has been a long time in the making whether owner/designer Susan W. Kulick realized it or not. Since Susan was a little girl growing up in Southern Louisiana, she always had a passion for being in the kitchen and cooking or baking with her mother and grandmother, affectionately known as “Mama” and “Nanny”. Susan always wanted to be the one to enter the local food contest and experiment with new recipes. Today, however, her husband and son are her best taste testers.   Her husband will even attest to the fact that it was"okay" to give his wife an electrical appliance for a special occasion...it must have been passion, for baking, that is!

While Susan was pregnant with her son, Logan, she enrolled in a cake decorating class just so that she would be able to make fabulous birthday cakes for her son. That one class has since blossomed into many more classes and Susan is now a cake-decorating instructor and will soon be teaching classes in the area.

In the summer of 2003, Susan and her family made Doylestown, Pennsylvania their home and she almost immediately began working for the Doylestown Farmer’s Market and Trauger’s Farm on Saturday mornings, all the while working full-time as a legal assistant, a career she had for more than 20 years. She started to bake pies and breads for the market and soon after a following of customers began. Today, there are people waiting in line before the market ever opens to take home one of her delicious pies.

As Susan’s passion for baking continued, over the years she has made cakes for her friends and family for their birthdays, showers and weddings and they have all encouraged her to start her own business. Susan had been contemplating the idea for some time and wondered if she could actually leave a career she had known for such a long time and venture into the world of being an entrepreneur. In April 2006 that’s exactly what she did. She left her career and her comfort zone behind and started Distinctive Desserts, a full-service dessert company for both social and corporate events. Just since April, aside from her many private customers, Susan has several wholesale customers as well, including restaurants and caterers in the Doylestown area purchasing her desserts.
